This year’s Performance Workshop will be performing Disney’s Mulan, Jr., with music and lyrics by Matthew Wilder and David Zippel, Stephen Schwartz, Jeanine Tesori and Alexa Junge and directed by Phyllis Bluestein. Disney’s Mulan premiered as a popular animated movie in 1998. It seems that every culture throughout history has had their heroes who have embarked on life-altering journeys.
China's story is about Mulan, the brave woman who became a heroine by helping the Chinese Army defeat a takeover by the Huns, who were often described as a group of nomadic people. Although there is no proof that Mulan actually existed, in China it is believed that she did.
The legend of Mulanteaches us about an individual’s sacrifice for the greater good and that the path to personal discovery lies in that sacrifice. It is also a story about love, destiny, honor, loyalty and strength. The talented cast is made up of twenty-three students aged 10 – 15 who will sing, dance and act out this play. Just as Mulan had to work with a team of other soldiers, we too are developing bonds and working in a teamlike fashion for the success of the play.
Disney’s Mulan Jr. will be performed for both schools and public audiences in January 2012 at the SPACE Theater, 508 West Perkins St., Ukiah. The public performances will take place as follows: Saturday, January 21, 2:00 PM and 7:00 PM & Saturday, January 28, 2:00 PM and 7 PM. We hope to see you there!
