After 50 years of bold work, Holly Near is still one of the most consistent and well-informed voices for change. Her work is loving, challenging, funny, thought -provoking, and remains rooted in the global community. As an outspoken singer and ambassador for peace, Holly brings a unique integration of world consciousness and self-evaluation, always growing and sharing experience humbly and boldly.

Growing up in Potter Valley and graduating Ukiah High School in 1967, Holly went on to attend UCLA but her academic journey ended after a few months when she was drawn into the world of film and television. She did guest spots on TV shows like The Partridge Family, All in the Family and played a supporting role in Slaughterhouse 5. Holly did a short run in Hair on Broadway but soon turned to singing full-time as a soloist as well as sharing the stage with her sisters, Laurel and Timothy in the Near Sisters (comedy) Singing Trio.

Near founded Redwood Records in 1972 working closely with her parents, Ann and Russell Near. For nearly 20 years the company released albums by Holly as well as albums of many other global artists including Sweet Honey in the Rock’s first album.  Near got an extraordinary education over the last 50 years working with such artist/activists as Jane Fonda, Barbara Lee, Donald Sutherland, Bonnie Raitt, Pete Seeger, Bernice Johnson Reagon, Harry Belafonte, Mercedes Sosa, Ronnie Gilbert, Inti Illimani, Arlo Guthrie, Meg Christian, Linda Tillary, Cris Williamson and her long-time song-writing partner, the late Jeff Langley.  Holly was the subject of a PBS documentary about her life and work called Singing for Our Lives. She recently completed an extensive website that memorializes the rise of women’s music. www.becauseofasong.com
